Highlights from the EBMT Belgian Nurses Group

by
Nurses Group

Who are we?
We are nurses, transplant coordinators, nurse specialists, working in the field of haematology and stem cell transplantation and coming from different regions of Belgium.
We are the nurse committee of the Belgian Hematology Society (BHS), where nurses, patients and doctors work together and we represent Belgium at the EBMT.

We work together:

  • For patients, in order to maintain the quality of haematology care.
  • With patients, a nurse takes part in meetings of the BHS patient committee and ensures that information is passed on to and from the committee. This new site - https://www.bhs.be/ - contains information on all the existing patient associations, both Dutch- and French-speaking.
  • With other BHS committees such as the JACIE committee (10th National JACIE Meeting Day on November 2024)
  • To promote and develop nursing care through educational programmes (e.g. haematology symposia, training), creation of 6 grants to enable nurses to attend the Annual Meeting of the EBMT.
  • To optimise working relationships with other disciplines (companies/organisations).
  • To protect the nursing profession, the haematology nurse.

What did we do?

  • Continuing nursing education: Organizing a nurse day at the General Annual Meeting of the BHS and other educational meeting as the post EBMT.
  • Links with other groups active in haematology (or oncology) such as EBMT, EONS (European Oncology Nursing Society, GFIC-GM (Francophone Group of Marrow Transplant Coordinators and Nurses).
  • Working together with firms to create practical tools for care (as programme of gestion of peripherical polyneuropathy).

Activities in 2023-2024 :

General Annual Meeting (GAM): Organization of the nursing congress in face to face
EBMT: some members of the group were speakers, chairs of sessions at the EBMT (Paris and Glasgow)
Post EBMT: Different topics were presented, a way to share knowledge, a way to continue to be informed and trained.
Training: Development of training for the nurses by the nurses on the theme of the ALL
Nurse day: Creation of a nurse day: A chance to talk about nurses to nurses, media campaign. Creation of a Starr Award for nurses.

What would we like to do in the future?

  • Continue the work to improve the quality of care for all haematology patient.
  • Have more visibility to motivate nurses to join our association and to work with us because together we are stronger
