Sustainability

At the EBMT, we are committed to making the Annual Meeting more environmentally sustainable each year. We invite our delegates to join us in this important challenge in the interest of environmental preservation.

Here are ways you can help make the 51st Annual Meeting of the EBMT more sustainable:

TRAVEL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Walk or use public transportation, carpool, or bike to arrive at the venue. This year's congress venue is located near the main train station and well connected by tram with the local airport.
  • Choose direct flights to reduce carbon emissions.

REDUCE WASTE:

  • Bring a refillable water bottle to Florence, Italy to be refilled at our water stations throughout the venue each day of the live event.
  • We also encourage you to bring an umbrella in the event of rain.
  • Properly sort and recycle waste at designated stations.
  • Only take as much food as needed to minimize waste.
  • Avoid food waste by taking only what you can eat at hotel buffets.
  • Recycle your lanyard and badge at the end of your Annual Meeting experience.
  • Take notes on a tablet or phone instead of using paper.
  • Donate or repurpose any conference items / merchandise instead of discarding it.
  • Bring your own toiletries to avoid single-use plastic bottles.

BE ENERGY & WATER CONSCIOUS:

  • Turn off hotel lights, TV, and unplug chargers when not in use.
  • Adjust the hotel thermostat to a moderate temperature.
  • Use stairs instead of elevators when possible.
  • Take shorter hotel showers and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
  • Reuse hotel towels and linens instead of requesting daily changes.

SUPPORT LOCAL & SUSTAINABLE BUSINESSES:

  • Eat at local restaurants instead of chains to support the community.
  • Purchase souvenirs from sustainable, ethical sources. The flyers that are included in this year's backpacks are made from 100% biodegradable seed-paper, which you can plant upon arriving back home.
  • Choose tours and activities that prioritize environmental responsibility.

ENCOURAGE AND GIVE FEEDBACK:

  • Support event organizers in making the conference greener.
  • Leave a review praising the hotel’s green initiatives.
  • Share sustainability tips and conference efforts on social media to raise awareness.
  • Provide feedback on sustainability efforts and suggest improvements for future events.

Here are the sustainable actions already taken for the 51st Annual Meeting of the EBMT:

FOOD & BEVERAGE:

  • Catering services use disposable tableware made from biodegradable materials, including cellulose pulp plates, paper glasses, and Mater-Bi cutlery, complying with the EU ban on single-use plastic cutlery.
  • Water fountains are available, encouraging participants to bring their reusable water bottles.
  • The menus focus on locally sourced, seasonal produce.
  • Surplus food will be donated to local non-profit organisations.

MATERIALS:

  • Congress lanyards are made from polyester fibers sourced from recycled PET bottles. This material reduces environmental impact.
  • Congress backpacks are crafted from 100% GRS-certified recycled polyester.
  • Our badges are made from 100% biodegradable paper.
  • Biodegradable seed-paper flyers are included in the backpacks.

GOING PAPERLESS:

  • We are increasing digital solutions to avoid printing.
  • The Congress Virtual Platform and App provide access to the scientific program, venue floorplans, and other important conference information.
  • Virtual attendance certificates will be provided.

WASTE MANAGEMENT:

  • Firenze Fiera provides waste separation bins and collaborates with companies specializing in recycling and material recovery.
  • We actively promote and encourage recycling throughout the congress.

The EBMT aims to introduce new initiatives each year at the Annual Meeting to protect and preserve the environment.

We encourage you to spread the word and inspire others for a positive impact!
